A detailed 1837 lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicting bill-posters at work in Paris, promoting the artist's own collection of lithographic prints.
This lithographic frontispiece, produced by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet in 1837, serves as a self-referential advertisement for his own work. The composition depicts a street scene where bill-posters are actively applying advertisements for the 'Album Lithographique' onto a large, central hoarding. Raffet, a master of the lithographic medium, uses this image to document the dissemination of his art within the urban environment of nineteenth-century Paris.
The scene is populated by figures engaged in the manual labour of public advertising. One man stands atop a ladder, smoothing a poster against the wall, while another holds a long pole to reach the upper sections. Two children observe the process from the ground, accompanied by a dog, providing a sense of scale and everyday realism. The central hoarding is covered in text and references to Raffet's other projects, including the 'Siège de la Citadelle d'Anvers'.
Raffet's technical proficiency is evident in the handling of the lithographic stone. He employs a range of tonal values to create depth, from the dark, textured clothing of the workers to the lighter, weathered surface of the wall. The perspective is carefully managed to draw the viewer's eye toward the central announcement of the album's title and date. This work offers a glimpse into the commercial realities of the print trade during the July Monarchy, where artists relied on public displays to attract subscribers to their serial publications. The inclusion of the publisher's details at the bottom confirms the print's function as a promotional tool for the Gihaut Frères firm. Through this image, Raffet captures the intersection of fine art production and the burgeoning culture of mass-market print distribution in Paris.
