A hand-coloured woodcut frontispiece from 1483, featuring a central female figure and heraldic shields, created by Erhard Reuwich for a pilgrimage travelogue.
This hand-coloured woodcut serves as the frontispiece for the 'Peregrinatio in terram sanctam', a travelogue documenting a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Created by the Utrecht-born artist Erhard Reuwich, the work demonstrates the technical precision required for early printed book illustration. Reuwich accompanied Bernhard von Breydenbach on his journey, providing the visual documentation that defined the publication.
The composition features a central female figure standing upon a pedestal, flanked by the heraldic shields of Bernhard von Breydenbach and Johannes Comes. The surrounding frame is dense with foliage and small figures, typical of the decorative conventions found in late fifteenth-century incunabula. The inclusion of specific coats of arms identifies the patrons of the volume, while the date 1483 is prominently displayed above the central figure. The hand-colouring applied to the woodcut adds a layer of visual information, distinguishing the heraldic elements and the drapery of the central figure from the surrounding ornamental border.
Reuwich is recognised for his role in integrating detailed illustrations into printed text. This frontispiece reflects the transition from manuscript illumination to the mechanical reproduction of images. The work is a primary example of how early printers utilised woodcuts to establish the identity and authority of a publication. The lines are deliberate, designed to be legible when printed alongside movable type. The overall arrangement balances the formal requirements of heraldry with the aesthetic preferences of the period, resulting in a structured, informative, and decorative page design. This print remains a significant example of early European book illustration, capturing the intersection of travel, patronage, and print technology in the late fifteenth century.
