He moved away from stylised conventions toward direct observation of nature. His work helped establish landscape as a distinct genre. He influenced later artists such as Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. The composition shows a frozen river or canal with figures engaged in winter activities. To the left, people are playing a game similar to golf or ice hockey. In the centre, a small wooden structure stands near a boat, and a figure is visible nearby. The right side is dominated by a large, ruined square tower, possibly a church or defensive structure. A man with a sack over his shoulder walks with a dog in the foreground.
