A tranquil Venetian canal scene by David Roberts shows two women, one holding a straw hat and the other carrying a basket of fruit, set against the backdrop of the city's architecture.
David Roberts, a Scottish painter (1796-1864), is best known for his detailed architectural paintings and Orientalist scenes. Though he initially trained as a house painter and decorator, Roberts became a prolific artist, travelling extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East to capture various architectural wonders and cultural scenes. His work is characterised by its precision, atmospheric perspective, and attention to detail, often depicting bustling cityscapes and historical monuments. Roberts was elected to the Royal Academy in 1841. His paintings and lithographs were widely circulated, contributing to a broader public interest in architecture and travel. 'Fruit Sellers from the Islands, Venice' depicts a quiet canal scene in Venice. Two women are shown, one leaning against a brick bridge, holding a straw hat, and the other carrying a basket of fruit. The composition is dominated by the canal and the surrounding buildings, which are rendered with careful attention to light and shadow. The palette is muted, with warm tones of ochre, brown, and cream, creating a sense of atmosphere and depth. The figures are secondary to the architectural setting, reflecting Roberts's interest in capturing the character of the city.
