A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting a ferry boat on the Sumida River with Mount Fuji visible in the twilight distance.
This woodblock print is a component of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the Edo period. The composition captures a scene at Ommayagashi, situated along the Sumida River in Edo, present-day Tokyo. In the foreground, a ferry boat laden with passengers navigates the water, while the Ryogoku Bridge spans the distance in the middle ground. Mount Fuji appears as a small, dark silhouette on the horizon, contrasting with the expansive sky.
Hokusai employs a sophisticated use of colour, particularly in the bokashi (gradation) technique applied to the sky, which transitions from a deep, dark tone at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon. This effect suggests the onset of twilight. The water is rendered with rhythmic, stylised lines that convey movement and depth. The figures on the boat are depicted with individualised postures, adding a sense of daily life to the scene. The bridge provides a horizontal anchor, balancing the verticality of the boat's pole and the distant mountain peak.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, Hokusai demonstrates his ability to integrate human activity with natural elements. The print reflects the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour layer is applied from a separate carved block. The balance between the busy foreground and the serene, distant mountain creates a sense of spatial tension. This work remains a representative example of Hokusai's approach to composition, where the viewer's eye is guided through the scene by the interaction of lines and shapes. The print offers a glimpse into the urban environment of Edo, documenting the river traffic that was essential to the city's commerce and travel.
