A serene Impressionist view of Mount Fuji from a canal in Iwabuchi, painted by Lilla Cabot Perry during her time in Japan.
Lilla Cabot Perry, an American painter who spent significant time in Japan between 1898 and 1901, produced this work during her residency. The composition captures the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji, rendered in soft, atmospheric tones of violet and pale lilac. The mountain dominates the background, while the foreground features a quiet canal reflecting the sky, flanked by dense, textured vegetation and yellow wildflowers.
Perry employs a broken brushstroke technique, characteristic of her Impressionist training and her close association with Claude Monet in Giverny. The light appears diffused, suggesting the hazy conditions often found in the Japanese countryside. The inclusion of the small boat on the water provides a sense of scale and stillness, grounding the ethereal mountain view in a specific, observable moment. Her approach to colour is deliberate, using a palette that balances the cool, distant mountain against the warmer, earthy tones of the canal bank.
This painting reflects the broader interest in Japanese subjects among Western artists at the turn of the twentieth century. Perry avoids the exoticism common in the period, choosing instead to focus on the quiet, everyday observation of the terrain. The application of paint is tactile, with visible impasto that adds depth to the foliage and the water surface. The work demonstrates her ability to translate the principles of French Impressionism into the distinct light and geography of Japan, resulting in a composition that is both observational and atmospheric.
