A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen depicting gudgeons on a riverbank, showcasing the artist's focus on natural history and aquatic life.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts a collection of gudgeons resting upon a riverbank. Flamen, a Flemish artist active in Paris during the seventeenth century, produced a significant body of work focused on aquatic life and avian subjects. His prints often combined scientific observation with the conventions of the period, placing specimens within a naturalistic setting.
The composition features a cluster of fish in the foreground, rendered with precise hatching to define their scales and physical form. Behind the fish, the artist constructs a rocky riverbank, complete with sparse vegetation and a distant bridge spanning the water. The background includes architectural elements, such as a small structure or bridge, which provide a sense of scale and depth to the scene. The inclusion of Latin and French text at the base, 'Gabius sive fundulus. Le Goujon', identifies the species, reflecting the era's interest in categorising the natural world through print media.
Flamen's technique relies on the clarity of the etched line to differentiate textures, from the smooth surfaces of the fish to the rugged, uneven quality of the stones. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance the requirements of a biological study with the aesthetic preferences of the Baroque period. The print is part of a larger series dedicated to fish, which circulated widely among collectors and naturalists of the time. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between artistic practice and the study of nature in the seventeenth century, offering a view into the methods used to document wildlife before the advent of modern photography.
