Claude Monet's 'Garden at Sainte-Adresse', painted in 1867, depicts a vibrant garden scene overlooking the sea, capturing a moment of leisure and maritime activity with Impressionistic brushwork and a bright colour palette.
Painted in the summer of 1867, Claude Monet's 'Garden at Sainte-Adresse' captures a scene of leisure and maritime activity from the artist's family garden in Normandy. The painting presents a high vantage point, offering a view over the garden towards the sea, where numerous ships are visible on the horizon. Two flags, one French and one possibly a signal flag, add vertical elements to the composition. The foreground is populated with figures relaxing in chairs, their faces obscured, inviting the viewer to imagine themselves in the scene. A couple strolls along the garden path, parasol in hand, adding a narrative element. The garden itself is depicted with a profusion of flowers in bloom, rendered with loose, broken brushstrokes characteristic of Impressionism. The colour palette is bright and airy, dominated by blues, greens, and reds, reflecting the coastal environment and the vibrant flora. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal bands, creating a sense of depth and distance.
