A fine example of British Naturalism, this painting by Henry Herbert La Thangue captures a young woman at work in the fields with a focus on light and texture.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a prominent member of the New English Art Club and a key figure in the British Naturalist movement. His work often focused on the realities of rural life, capturing the daily activities of agricultural workers with a focus on light and atmosphere. Gathering Wool is a representative example of his approach, depicting a young woman engaged in the manual labour of collecting stray wool from the fields.
The composition is defined by the dappled light filtering through the trees, which creates a complex pattern of shadows across the grass and the figure. La Thangue employs a technique that balances precise observation with a loose, painterly application of pigment. The subject is rendered with a sense of quiet dignity, avoiding the sentimentality often found in Victorian genre painting. The basket, filled with the gathered material, serves as a functional element that anchors the figure within the environment.
La Thangue studied at the Royal Academy Schools and later in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme. His time in France introduced him to the plein air methods of the Barbizon school and the influence of Jules Bastien-Lepage. These influences are evident in his commitment to painting outdoors, where he could observe the specific qualities of natural light. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, reflecting the textures of the wool, the fabric of the girl's apron, and the surrounding vegetation. This work provides a window into the late nineteenth-century British countryside, documenting a specific type of labour that was common in rural communities of the period. The focus remains on the physical interaction between the worker and the land, presented through a lens of objective observation.
