A striking modernist lithograph by Jacob Bendien, featuring a stylised female form integrated with geometric spheres through precise, rhythmic hatching.
Jacob Bendien was a Dutch artist whose work often explored the intersection of the human form and abstract geometry. This lithograph, titled Gedeformeerd vrouwenlichaam met drie cirkels, demonstrates his interest in the distortion of the figure to create a sense of psychological weight and spatial ambiguity. The composition features a stylised, elongated female form that appears to merge with three distinct circular shapes. These spheres act as both physical obstructions and formal elements that disrupt the natural anatomy of the subject.
The technique employed here relies on fine, parallel hatching lines that wrap around the contours of the body and the spheres. This method creates a metallic, almost sculptural quality, giving the forms a sense of volume and density. The background is composed of similar horizontal striations, which push the figure forward while simultaneously grounding it in a dark, atmospheric space. By stripping away realistic detail, Bendien focuses on the rhythmic tension between the curved lines of the body and the rigid geometry of the circles.
Bendien was associated with the development of modern art in the Netherlands during the early twentieth century. His approach often moved away from traditional representation, favouring a synthesis of form that prioritised internal logic over external appearance. This print is an example of his ability to manipulate light and shadow through printmaking, using the contrast between the white of the paper and the dense black ink to define the edges of his subjects. The result is an image that feels suspended in time, inviting the viewer to consider the relationship between organic shapes and mathematical precision. The work remains a clear example of the experimental spirit that defined much of the European avant-garde during this period.
