A pair of traditional Japanese hanging scrolls depicting geese amongst reeds, executed in ink and light colour on silk by Kano Sosen Narinobu.
This diptych, attributed to Kano Sosen Narinobu, demonstrates the minimalist aesthetic characteristic of the late Edo period Kano school. The artist employs the kacho-ga tradition, focusing on the observation of birds and plants to capture a fleeting moment in nature. Each scroll presents a singular goose positioned amongst sparse reeds, rendered with an economy of brushwork that prioritises gesture over anatomical precision.
The composition relies on the concept of ma, or negative space, which allows the viewer to focus on the subtle variations in ink wash. The artist uses wet, dark ink for the bodies of the geese, contrasting with the lighter, drier strokes used to define the reeds. This technique creates a sense of movement and atmosphere, suggesting the damp, quiet environment of a riverbank. The vertical orientation of the scrolls dictates the arrangement of the subjects, forcing a verticality that mirrors the growth of the reeds.
Kano Sosen Narinobu was a member of the Kano lineage, a family of painters who served the shogunate for centuries. While the school is often associated with formal, decorative screens, this work reflects the more personal, literati-influenced style that gained popularity among artists during the early 19th century. The restraint shown here is typical of the period, where the ability to convey a scene with minimal intervention was considered a mark of technical mastery. The silk support provides a soft texture that absorbs the ink, softening the edges of the forms and contributing to the overall sense of calm. These scrolls offer a view into the traditional Japanese appreciation for seasonal change and the quiet observation of the natural world, presented here with a focus on balance and simplicity.
