A woodblock print by Ohara Koson, 'Geese in Flight Before a Full Moon' depicts two geese in flight against a pale moon. The work exemplifies the Shin-Hanga movement's emphasis on realism and atmospheric effects.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his bird-and-flower paintings (kachō-e) in the Shin-Hanga style. This art movement, active primarily during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, aimed to revitalise traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing by incorporating Western influences and a focus on naturalistic representation. Koson initially trained in traditional Japanese painting, but later transitioned to woodblock printing, collaborating with various publishers to produce a large number of prints, many of which were exported to the West. His work is characterised by its sensitive observation of nature, refined technique, and decorative appeal. 'Geese in Flight Before a Full Moon' exemplifies Koson's mastery of kachō-e. The print depicts two geese in dynamic flight against a pale, full moon. The artist captures the birds' anatomy and plumage with careful detail, using subtle gradations of colour to convey texture and form. The composition is simple yet effective, with the stark contrast between the dark geese and the luminous moon creating a striking visual effect. The print showcases the Shin-Hanga movement's emphasis on realism and atmospheric effects, while also retaining the decorative qualities of traditional Japanese art.
