A striking ink drawing by Dutch artist Lucebert, featuring a fragmented, abstract figure rendered with precise lines and dense cross-hatching.
Lucebert, the pseudonym of Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. Known primarily for his poetry, he was also a prolific visual artist whose work often mirrors the raw, spontaneous energy of the CoBrA movement. This ink drawing, titled Gefragmenteerd wezen (Fragmented Being), displays the artist's characteristic approach to form and line.
The composition is constructed through a series of interlocking, geometric planes that suggest a figure in a state of dissolution or reconstruction. Lucebert employs a confident, calligraphic line to define these shapes, while using dense cross-hatching to create depth and shadow within the segmented areas. The central figure, marked by a singular, watchful eye, emerges from the abstraction, suggesting a psychological dimension to the physical fragmentation.
Unlike the more chaotic works of his earlier career, this piece from 1975 shows a controlled, almost architectural rigour. The lines are precise, yet they retain the immediacy of a sketch. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, graphic quality that emphasises the relationship between the individual shapes and the overall structure of the page. The presence of a smaller, secondary figure at the top adds a sense of narrative ambiguity, a common trait in Lucebert's visual output. This print captures the artist's ability to balance spontaneity with a clear, deliberate visual language, offering a glimpse into his practice of exploring the human condition through distorted and reassembled forms.
