A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert, depicting two goats resting near a gourd in a pastoral setting.
This etching by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert displays the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Bolswert, a skilled engraver from the Southern Netherlands, worked extensively in the orbit of Peter Paul Rubens, yet his independent work often focused on the natural world and rural subjects. In this composition, two goats are depicted in a quiet, pastoral setting. One animal rests in the foreground, while the other stands behind it, both rendered with careful attention to the texture of their coats and the curvature of their horns. To the left, a large gourd hangs from a vine, providing a structural counterpoint to the organic forms of the animals. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define form and shadow, creating a sense of volume within the small frame. The background is kept minimal, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the animals and the vegetation. This work reflects the period interest in natural history and the observation of domestic animals, which were frequently documented in prints for collectors and artists alike. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition demonstrate Bolswert's mastery of the burin and etching needle. The print is presented on paper that retains the character of the original period, offering a glimpse into the print culture of the Dutch Golden Age. It is a study of form and texture, capturing a moment of stillness in the countryside. The inclusion of the gourd, marked with a subtle inscription, adds a layer of detail that invites close inspection of the artist's craft.
