A 1552 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the allegorical figure of Temperance, rendered with the precise line work of the Northern Renaissance.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1552, depicts the personification of Temperance, or Gematigdheid. As a member of the group known as the Little Masters, Aldegrever produced small-scale, highly detailed prints that were widely circulated among collectors in the sixteenth century. The figure stands in a contrapposto pose, holding a tall staff with a banner that features a fish motif. Her drapery is rendered with precise, rhythmic lines that define the volume of her form against a rocky, sparse background.
To her left, a coat of arms is surmounted by a bird, adding a heraldic element to the composition. The artist includes his characteristic monogram, the letters AG joined together, on a stone block near the base of the figure. This work is part of a series exploring the virtues, a common theme in Northern Renaissance art. The engraving demonstrates the technical control required for the medium, with subtle cross-hatching used to create shadows and depth within the folds of the fabric and the surrounding terrain. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the staff providing a clear axis for the figure. The inclusion of the fish on the banner and the specific heraldic details suggest a commission or a specific iconographic programme intended for an educated audience familiar with classical and moral allegories. The print reflects the period interest in humanistic subjects, where abstract concepts were given physical form through classical imagery. The clarity of the line work and the deliberate placement of each element demonstrate the meticulous approach characteristic of Aldegrever's output during his later years in Soest.
