A striking sumizuri-e woodblock print by Itō Jakuchū, featuring a cicada on a tree trunk alongside elegant Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print originates from the Genpo yōka, a collection of works by the Japanese painter Itō Jakuchū. The composition employs the sumizuri-e technique, which relies on black ink to create high-contrast imagery. Jakuchū, a merchant-turned-artist from Kyoto, is known for his unconventional approach to traditional subjects. His work often deviates from the standard aesthetic norms of the eighteenth century, favouring bold graphic qualities and precise observation.
The print features a cicada resting upon a tree trunk, rendered with sharp, clean lines that contrast against the deep black background. The surrounding foliage is depicted with a fluid, calligraphic sensibility. Beside the natural subject, the artist includes columns of kanji script, integrating text and image into a unified visual field. This combination of calligraphy and illustration is characteristic of the artist's interest in the interplay between literary culture and visual art.
Jakuchū often experimented with the physical limitations of the woodblock medium. By using large areas of negative space and solid black ink, he achieves a graphic clarity that feels modern. The presence of the artist's red seals provides a visual anchor, balancing the stark monochrome palette. This work reflects the artist's ability to capture the essence of a subject through minimal means, focusing on the silhouette and the texture of the natural world. The print remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in Edo-period printmaking, where the carver and the artist worked in close coordination to translate the brushwork of the original painting into the final printed form.
