A formal double portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds depicting George Capel and Lady Elizabeth Capel in an outdoor setting, painted in 1768.
Sir Joshua Reynolds, the first President of the Royal Academy, produced this double portrait of George Capel, Viscount Malden, and his sister, Lady Elizabeth Capel, in 1768. The composition reflects the conventions of eighteenth-century British portraiture, where aristocratic children were frequently depicted in outdoor settings that suggested their family status and future roles.
George stands to the left, dressed in a pale pink suit, holding a walking stick. His posture is upright, conveying a sense of youthful authority. Beside him, Lady Elizabeth is seated, leaning against a stone plinth draped with a heavy red cloth. She holds a garland of flowers, while a basket of roses rests at her feet. The inclusion of these floral elements adds a decorative quality to the scene, softening the formality of the sitters' poses.
Reynolds employs a characteristic painterly technique, using loose brushwork to define the textures of the clothing and the foliage in the background. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the faces of the two subjects, while the surrounding environment remains in shadow. This approach creates a sense of depth and focus on the sitters' expressions. The work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to balance formal portraiture with a sense of naturalism, capturing the likenesses of the Capel siblings within a structured, classical framework. The painting is part of the collection at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.
