An allegorical study of Justice and Mercy by the Dutch Rococo master Jacob de Wit, rendered in pen and ink with wash.
This drawing by the Dutch master Jacob de Wit depicts the allegorical figures of Justice and Mercy. De Wit was a prolific artist in the eighteenth century, known for his decorative schemes and his ability to mimic the appearance of marble relief sculpture through a technique known as 'witjes'. This work demonstrates his command of line and wash, capturing the fluid drapery and classical proportions typical of the Rococo period.
Justice is identified by the scales held in her hand, while Mercy sits beside her, engaged in a dialogue mediated by the putti above. The composition is structured to suggest a sculptural group, with the figures arranged in a balanced, triangular formation. De Wit uses light and shadow to define the forms, employing a grey wash to create volume against the paper surface. The presence of the putti, who hold a tablet, adds a narrative element to the scene, suggesting a divine or legal decree being observed by the two virtues.
As a preparatory study or a finished cabinet piece, the work reflects the artist's focus on classical themes and his technical proficiency in drawing. The lines are confident and expressive, showing the artist's process in building up the figures. The choice of medium allows for a subtle range of tones, which enhances the three-dimensional quality of the figures. This piece provides an insight into the academic training and the thematic interests of Dutch artists during the mid-eighteenth century, where allegorical subjects remained a standard for public and private commissions.
