A detailed woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicting a traditional hanami gathering under a cherry tree during the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicts a social gathering held beneath the boughs of a cherry tree, a traditional practice known as hanami. The composition captures a group of figures seated on mats, engaged in conversation and dining. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of the Katsukawa school, focusing on the arrangement of figures within a defined space. The scene includes various vessels for food and drink, suggesting a relaxed, communal atmosphere.
Shuntei, a student of Katsukawa Shun'ei, was known for his work in the ukiyo-e tradition, often producing prints that documented the customs and leisure activities of the Edo period. The print is executed in monochrome, allowing the viewer to focus on the precision of the line work and the subtle patterns of the kimonos worn by the participants. The cherry tree, indicated by the delicate foliage above, frames the group, while the inclusion of text in the upper left corner provides context or poetic commentary common in prints of this era.
The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, a characteristic feature of Japanese prints from this period, which prioritises the decorative quality of the scene over realistic perspective. The figures are rendered with individualised postures and expressions, contributing to the sense of a specific, lived moment. This work offers a glimpse into the social habits of the time, where the appreciation of nature and the company of others were central to cultural life. The print serves as a record of historical leisure, demonstrating the technical skill of the artist in managing complex group compositions within the constraints of the woodblock medium.
