A detailed graphite drawing by Anthonie van Teijn depicting a serene canal scene along the Kostverlorenvaart in Amsterdam.
This graphite drawing by Anthonie van Teijn captures a quiet moment along the Kostverlorenvaart in Amsterdam. The composition focuses on the Baarsjesweg, a path running parallel to the canal, lined with modest houses and mature trees. Van Teijn employs a delicate touch with his pencil, using soft shading to define the architectural forms and the reflective surface of the water.
The scene provides a historical record of the area before the rapid urban expansion of the late nineteenth century. A small boat is moored at the canal edge, suggesting the importance of water transport for local commerce during this period. The artist balances the solid mass of the buildings on the left with the open space of the canal on the right, creating a sense of calm.
Van Teijn was known for his topographical work, often documenting the changing appearance of Dutch towns and rural outskirts. His approach here is observational, prioritising clarity and accurate representation over dramatic flair. The drawing reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in local history and the preservation of regional character through art. The muted tones of the graphite allow the viewer to focus on the textures of the brickwork, the foliage, and the gentle ripples in the canal. This piece offers a glimpse into the daily life of a Dutch waterway, preserved through the artist's precise and measured hand.
