A detailed topographical watercolour by Isaac Ouwater, depicting a family in the garden of the Buitenplaats Overberg estate in the late eighteenth century.
Isaac Ouwater was a Dutch painter and draughtsman known for his precise topographical views of cities and country estates. This work depicts the Buitenplaats Overberg, a typical Dutch country house of the late eighteenth century. The composition is structured around the residence, which sits in the middle ground, framed by mature trees that create a natural proscenium.
In the foreground, a family group occupies the garden path. The figures are rendered with the characteristic attention to costume and posture common in Ouwater's work. A man in a frock coat stands to the left, while a woman in a wide-brimmed hat and a child are positioned near a rectangular pond. The pond reflects the surrounding greenery, adding a sense of stillness to the scene. The architecture of the house features a stepped gable and weather vanes, typical of the period's domestic design.
Ouwater employed a delicate application of watercolour, using muted tones to suggest the soft light of a Dutch afternoon. The ink outlines provide clarity to the architectural elements and the foliage, demonstrating the artist's background in topographical documentation. The scene captures the orderly nature of the Dutch country estate, where manicured gardens and water features were integrated into the living space. This print offers a glimpse into the domestic life of the Dutch elite during the late eighteenth century, documenting both the architectural style and the social customs of the era. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in recording the physical appearance of private properties and their surrounding environments.
