A detailed topographical engraving by Jan Goeree documenting the architectural history of the Haarlemmerpoort in Amsterdam.
This print by Jan Goeree offers a dual perspective on the architectural evolution of the Haarlemmerpoort in Amsterdam. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, each documenting a specific iteration of the city gate. The upper panel depicts the older fortification, known as the Kruystooren, situated near the Haaringpakkery. The lower panel presents the subsequent structure, reflecting the urban development of the period.
Goeree employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of early eighteenth-century Dutch topographical engraving. The work prioritises clarity and historical record over atmospheric effect. The artist captures the surrounding water, small vessels, and distant windmills, providing context for the gate's position within the city's defensive and commercial infrastructure. The inclusion of descriptive text beneath each scene identifies the structures, confirming the print's function as a visual archive of Amsterdam's changing physical form.
As a draughtsman and engraver, Goeree was active in documenting the Dutch Republic. His work often focused on the intersection of civic architecture and the maritime environment. This particular print demonstrates the meticulous approach required for such topographical studies, where the accuracy of the building's silhouette and its relationship to the water were of primary concern. The print retains the original plate marks and margins, offering a view into the methods of historical documentation during the late Dutch Golden Age. It serves as a record of the transition between medieval defensive architecture and the more open, commercial structures that followed as the city expanded beyond its original walls.
