An eighteenth-century etching by Leonard Schenk showing the Geesterpoort in Alkmaar, featuring a calm waterway and traditional Dutch architecture.
This etching by Leonard Schenk depicts the Geesterpoort, a historic gate in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. Schenk, an engraver and publisher active in Amsterdam during the eighteenth century, produced numerous topographical views that documented the urban and rural character of the Netherlands. His work often served to satisfy the period interest in local geography and civic pride.
The composition presents a calm, horizontal view across a waterway. The Geesterpoort stands as the primary architectural element, connected to the surrounding land by a bridge. To the left, a church spire rises above the trees, providing vertical balance to the gatehouse. The foreground features a small boat with figures, which adds a sense of scale and daily activity to the scene. The sky is rendered with fine, parallel hatching, a technique common in period printmaking to suggest cloud formations and atmospheric depth.
Schenk employs a precise, controlled line quality. The etching captures the architectural details of the gate and the surrounding foliage with clarity. The print includes bilingual titling in Dutch and French, a standard practice for eighteenth-century prints intended for a broader European market. This work provides a clear record of Alkmaar before the industrial expansion of the nineteenth century. It reflects the conventions of Dutch topographical art, where the focus remains on the accurate representation of public structures and the quiet rhythm of life near the water. The print is a clean example of the technical proficiency found in Dutch graphic arts of the era, offering a window into the appearance of Alkmaar during the mid-eighteenth century.
