A detailed 1743 etching by Jan Caspar Philips showing the harbour of Middelburg and the iconic Lange Jan abbey tower.
This etching by Jan Caspar Philips, dated 1743, depicts a view of the harbour in Middelburg, with the prominent Lange Jan abbey tower rising in the distance. Philips, a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam, produced numerous topographical works that documented the urban and rural character of the Netherlands during the eighteenth century. His technical approach relies on precise line work to define the architectural forms of the canal-side buildings and the rigging of the moored vessels.
The composition follows a classic Dutch topographical tradition, using the canal as a visual lead into the heart of the city. The left bank features a row of traditional Dutch houses, rendered with attention to their gabled facades and domestic scale. On the right, a sailing vessel sits at anchor, its mast and spars providing a vertical counterpoint to the distant tower. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, filled with light, etched clouds that suggest a breezy day. The artist employs varied hatching techniques to differentiate between the textures of stone, water, wood, and foliage.
Such prints were often collected in topographical albums or used as illustrations for historical and geographical publications. They provide a record of Dutch urban planning and maritime activity. The inclusion of small figures along the quay adds a sense of scale and daily life to the scene. This print is a clear example of the mid-eighteenth-century interest in documenting specific regional locations with accuracy and clarity. The work remains a useful reference for the appearance of Middelburg before later urban modifications. The print captures the quiet atmosphere of a provincial harbour, balancing the structural rigidity of the architecture with the organic forms of the trees and the shifting patterns of the clouds.
