A detailed ink and wash drawing by Hendrik Vettewinkel, capturing the Nieuwe Stadsherberg and harbour activity in Amsterdam from the IJ.
This work by Hendrik Vettewinkel depicts the Nieuwe Stadsherberg, a prominent inn located in Amsterdam, as viewed from the waters of the IJ. Vettewinkel, a Dutch artist known for his focus on maritime subjects, captures the busy atmosphere of the harbour during the mid-nineteenth century. The composition centres on a large sailing vessel, its masts and rigging rendered with precision against a cloudy sky. Smaller craft, including a rowing boat with two figures, occupy the foreground, providing a sense of scale and activity on the water.
The artist employs a monochromatic palette of ink and wash to define the forms of the ships and the distant architecture of the city. The use of light and shadow creates depth, allowing the viewer to distinguish between the immediate foreground and the structures further back. The Nieuwe Stadsherberg itself is visible on the left, its silhouette contributing to the historical character of the scene. Vettewinkel demonstrates a clear understanding of nautical architecture, ensuring that the rigging and hulls of the vessels are depicted with technical accuracy. This piece offers a glimpse into the maritime life of Amsterdam, documenting the appearance of the harbour before later industrial developments altered the waterfront. The work remains a useful visual record of the city's connection to its waterways during the nineteenth century.
