A 1902 photochrom print by William Henry Jackson depicting the geothermal activity at the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park.
This image captures the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, rendered through the photochrom process. William Henry Jackson, a photographer known for his extensive documentation of the American West, produced this work during his tenure with the Detroit Photographic Company. The photochrom technique, which involved applying colour to black and white negatives via lithographic stones, allowed for the mass production of colour images before the advent of true colour photography.
The composition presents a wide view of the geothermal activity. Steam rises from the geysers, creating a contrast against the clear, pale blue sky. The foreground shows the mineral-rich earth, marked by orange and yellow deposits typical of the basin. A wooden walkway stretches into the distance, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the rugged environment. The trees in the background are sparse, reflecting the harsh conditions of the volcanic soil.
Jackson's work was instrumental in shaping the public perception of the American wilderness. His photographs were often used to promote the national park system, providing viewers with a visual record of geological phenomena. The technical precision of the photochrom process ensures that the textures of the steam and the mineral pools remain clear. This print offers a view of Yellowstone as it appeared at the turn of the twentieth century, documenting the natural features of the basin with a clarity that defined the era of travel photography.
