A detailed eighteenth-century topographical drawing by Nicolaes Aartman, capturing a winter scene at the Boerenwetering with figures skating on ice.
This work by Nicolaes Aartman depicts a winter scene at the Boerenwetering, a waterway located near Amsterdam. Aartman, a Dutch draughtsman active during the eighteenth century, specialised in topographical views that documented the rural and semi-urban surroundings of the Netherlands. The composition centres on the overhaal, a mechanical device used to haul small boats over a dam or embankment, which was a common feature in the Dutch water management system of the period.
The scene captures a quiet winter day with figures skating on the frozen water, a motif frequently observed in Dutch art. The architecture, including the traditional gabled house on the left, provides a sense of place and historical context. Aartman employs a delicate pen-and-ink technique, supplemented by subtle grey washes to define the atmospheric conditions and the soft, diffused light of a winter sky. The bare tree on the right adds a vertical element that balances the horizontal expanse of the frozen canal.
Unlike the dramatic compositions of earlier centuries, this drawing reflects the more restrained, observational approach of the mid-eighteenth century. The focus remains on the functional aspects of the Dutch environment, such as the windmill in the distance and the infrastructure of the canal. The artist demonstrates a precise hand in rendering the figures and the mechanical details of the overhaal, providing a clear record of the site as it appeared during his lifetime. This print offers an authentic glimpse into the daily life and engineering practices of the Dutch Republic, presented with the clarity and technical skill characteristic of Aartman's topographical output.
