A detailed 1839 lithograph by Thomas Shotter Boys depicting the Saint-Etienne-du-Mont church and the Pantheon in Paris, rendered with atmospheric tonal depth.
This lithograph by Thomas Shotter Boys captures a precise view of the Saint-Etienne-du-Mont church and the Pantheon in Paris. Published as part of his 1839 collection, 'Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen, etc.', the work demonstrates the artist's technical mastery of the lithographic medium. Boys, who trained under the engraver George Cooke and later worked alongside Richard Parkes Bonington in Paris, brought a painterly sensibility to his architectural prints.
The composition employs a dramatic use of light and shadow to define the urban space. The tall, narrow tower of Saint-Etienne-du-Mont dominates the left side of the frame, its verticality balanced by the distant, rounded dome of the Pantheon. The street level is populated by small, sketch-like figures that provide a sense of scale to the massive stone structures. The soft, atmospheric quality of the sky and the subtle tonal gradations across the building facades reflect the artist's ability to translate the texture of masonry and the quality of light into monochromatic ink.
Boys was instrumental in popularising the use of chromolithography and tinted lithography in Britain. His work often focused on the intersection of historical architecture and daily life, documenting the appearance of European cities before the extensive urban renovations of the mid-nineteenth century. This particular view offers a quiet, observational perspective on a well-known Parisian square, avoiding the grandiosity often associated with such monuments. The print remains a record of the city's architectural character during the early Victorian period, showing the interplay between the Gothic features of the church and the Neoclassical lines of the Pantheon.
