This etching by Hieronymus Cock, dated 1550, depicts the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian in Rome. Cock, a Flemish printmaker and publisher based in Antwerp, travelled to Italy during the 1540s. His observations of Roman antiquities provided the source material for his influential series of prints, which introduced Northern European audiences to the scale and grandeur of classical architecture.

The composition employs a low viewpoint, which emphasises the monumental nature of the remaining brickwork and vaulted arches. Vegetation clings to the crumbling masonry, suggesting the passage of time and the reclamation of the site by nature.
