A precise architectural study of the Baths of Diocletian in Rome, rendered in ink and wash by the French Neoclassical artist Charles-Louis Clérisseau.
Charles-Louis Clérisseau was a French architect and draughtsman who spent significant time in Italy, where he became a central figure in the study of Roman antiquities. This drawing depicts the Baths of Diocletian in Rome, a site that captured the imagination of many eighteenth-century artists and architects. Clérisseau was known for his precise documentation of ruins, often providing visual records for the Grand Tourists who travelled through Europe.
The work displays the characteristic restraint of the Neoclassical period. Clérisseau uses delicate pen lines to define the structural remnants of the ancient baths, while the application of wash provides depth and shadow to the weathered masonry. The composition focuses on the physical reality of the site, capturing the crumbling brickwork and the vast, empty spaces that defined the ruins before modern restoration efforts altered their appearance. Unlike the more dramatic, imaginative reconstructions of his contemporaries, this piece remains grounded in direct observation.
Clérisseau's training as an architect is evident in the way he handles the perspective and the structural integrity of the arches and walls. He avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the geometry of the Roman construction to dictate the visual flow of the image. The muted palette, achieved through the use of sepia or ink wash, emphasises the age and texture of the stone. This print offers a glimpse into the scholarly approach to antiquity that defined the mid-eighteenth century, providing a clear, unadorned view of one of Rome's most significant archaeological sites. It is an ideal piece for those interested in the history of architecture and the evolution of the European view of the classical past.
