Kusakabe Kimbei, a former assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried, operated a successful studio in Yokohama during the late nineteenth century. His work catered to both domestic patrons and the growing number of international travellers visiting Japan during the Meiji period.

The composition presents the pagoda rising above a dense cluster of trees, framed by a low perimeter wall in the foreground. The photograph exhibits the characteristic sepia tones associated with the albumen process, which involved coating paper with egg white and silver nitrate. This technique allowed for the fine detail visible in the architectural elements of the pagoda, including the bracket systems and the tiered roof structure.

Kimbei was known for his technical precision and his ability to curate views that aligned with the aesthetic expectations of the era.
