A refined etching and aquatint by Théodore Roussel, featuring a coastal view of Bognor Regis framed by delicate, organic decorative motifs.
Théodore Roussel, a French artist who spent much of his career in London, produced this work during a period of experimentation with colour printing techniques. The composition is divided into two distinct visual registers. At the centre, a small, rectangular etching depicts the sea at Bognor Regis. This section uses a limited palette of blues, greys, and sandy tones to capture the coastal atmosphere. The water is rendered with horizontal strokes, suggesting the rhythmic movement of the tide against the shore.
Surrounding this central image is a decorative border, etched in a lighter, more delicate line. This frame features flowing, organic curves reminiscent of the Art Nouveau style, interspersed with geometric Greek key patterns. The contrast between the naturalistic, coloured view of the sea and the monochromatic, stylised frame creates a tension between the representational and the decorative. Roussel was known for his interest in the technical aspects of printmaking, often creating his own frames and borders to complement his subjects. This piece reflects his approach to the print as a complete, designed object rather than a simple reproduction of a scene. The inclusion of the decorative surround elevates the work, transforming a modest coastal study into a formalised composition. The print demonstrates the influence of Japanese woodblock prints on Western artists of the era, particularly in the use of negative space and the integration of decorative elements with pictorial subjects. The work remains a fine example of the Etching Revival, a movement that sought to re-establish the medium as a legitimate form of artistic expression through careful attention to plate tone and ink application.
