A delicate pen and wash drawing by Jan Lapp, depicting a round tower on a rocky Italian hillside with a traveller and donkey below.
This drawing by the Dutch artist Jan Lapp depicts a solitary round tower perched upon a rocky outcrop. The composition captures a quiet, rural scene, likely inspired by the artist's travels through the Italian countryside. The structure of the tower, with its simple, functional architecture, dominates the upper left portion of the frame, while the rugged terrain below provides a natural foundation.
Lapp employs a delicate technique, using pen and brown ink to define the contours of the rock face and the masonry of the tower. The application of brown wash adds depth and volume, creating soft shadows that suggest the direction of sunlight. A small figure, accompanied by a donkey, is visible on the path in the lower right, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the quiet environment. The artist focuses on the textures of the stone and the sparse vegetation, maintaining a light, airy quality throughout the work.
Such drawings were common among Dutch artists who travelled to Italy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These works often served as personal records of the journey or as studies for larger compositions. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the atmosphere of the location through subtle tonal variations. The paper retains its original warm, aged tone, which complements the sepia palette of the ink and wash. This piece offers a glimpse into the observational practices of the period, where the artist acted as both a traveller and a chronicler of the European terrain. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its status as a representative example of Dutch topographical drawing.
