A nineteenth-century stereoscopic albumen print by Francis Frith, documenting an architectural site in Cairo, Egypt.
This stereoscopic albumen print by Francis Frith captures an architectural site in Cairo, Egypt, during the mid-nineteenth century. Frith, a prominent British photographer, undertook three major expeditions to the Middle East between 1856 and 1860. His work provided the Victorian public with a visual record of regions that were previously known only through written accounts or artistic interpretations.
The image displays the dual-frame format characteristic of stereoviews, intended for use with a stereoscope to produce a three-dimensional effect. The composition focuses on a stone structure, likely a funerary monument or mosque, set against the arid terrain of the city outskirts. The architectural details, including the arched entrance and the small domed pavilion, are rendered with the clarity typical of the wet-collodion process. The presence of a solitary figure in the foreground provides a sense of scale, contrasting the human element with the permanence of the stone masonry.
Frith operated his own publishing firm, Francis Frith & Co., which became one of the largest photographic businesses in the world. His documentation of Egyptian monuments was highly sought after, as it aligned with the era's fascination with archaeology and the history of the Near East. The sepia tones of the albumen print reflect the chemical processes of the period, which have aged to produce the characteristic warm, monochromatic palette. This print offers a glimpse into the methods of early travel photography, where the technical demands of transporting glass plates and portable darkrooms were as significant as the artistic composition itself. The work remains a primary source for historians studying the urban development of Cairo and the history of photographic documentation in the nineteenth century.
