A refined ink and wash drawing by Aert Schouman, depicting the Dutch town of Enkhuizen from the sea in 1777.
This drawing by Aert Schouman, titled Gezicht op Enkhuizen van zee, captures the Dutch town of Enkhuizen as seen from the water. Executed in 1777, the work demonstrates the artist's mastery of ink and wash techniques. Schouman, a versatile draughtsman and painter, was active in the eighteenth century and frequently documented the topography of the Netherlands.
The composition is defined by its expansive, atmospheric sky and the low horizon line typical of Dutch marine art. A single sailing vessel occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the distant silhouette of the town. The Drommedaris, a prominent defensive tower in Enkhuizen, is clearly visible, acting as a navigational and visual anchor for the viewer. Schouman uses subtle gradations of grey wash to suggest the movement of the water and the hazy quality of the light over the Zuiderzee.
Unlike the dramatic, high-contrast works of the seventeenth-century masters, this piece reflects a more restrained, observational approach. The lines are precise yet fluid, capturing the essential features of the harbour without unnecessary detail. The paper's texture remains visible, contributing to the overall sense of immediacy and lightness. This work is a fine example of the topographical tradition that remained popular among Dutch collectors during the late eighteenth century. It offers a quiet, contemplative view of a historic maritime centre, preserved through the artist's careful observation of light and form.
