A delicate, hand-coloured etching by Swiss artist Johann Ludwig Aberli, capturing a serene view of the Chateau de Cerlier near Erlach.
Johann Ludwig Aberli was a Swiss painter and engraver known for his topographical views of the Swiss countryside. This work depicts the Chateau de Cerlier, situated near Erlach. Aberli developed a specific technique for his prints, which involved etching the outline and then applying watercolour by hand to provide colour. This method allowed for a delicate, airy quality that captured the light and atmosphere of the alpine region.
The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century topographical art. A path leads the eye from the foreground, where two figures and a dog provide a sense of scale, toward the chateau perched upon a wooded hill. Beyond the structure, the view opens to reveal the expanse of the lake and distant mountains. The use of soft, muted tones reflects the artist's preference for naturalism over dramatic effect. The print is framed by a clean, simple border, typical of the period's presentation style for such views.
Aberli's work was popular among travellers on the Grand Tour, who sought souvenirs of their journeys through Switzerland. His ability to render the specific character of the Swiss terrain made his prints highly sought after by collectors across Europe. This particular view of the Chateau de Cerlier demonstrates his attention to architectural detail combined with a balanced approach to the surrounding environment. The print remains a record of the site as it appeared in the late eighteenth century, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the era. The clarity of the line work, paired with the subtle application of colour, creates a sense of calm and order that is characteristic of Aberli's output.
