A precise watercolour study of the Saint Louis fortress in Sidon, Lebanon, by Dutch artist and cartographer Charles William Meredith van de Velde.
Charles William Meredith van de Velde was a Dutch naval officer and cartographer who travelled extensively through the Levant during the mid-nineteenth century. His artistic output is defined by a precise, observational approach to the topography of the Middle East. This watercolour depicts the fortress of Saint Louis in Sidon, Lebanon, a site of historical importance that attracted many European travellers of the period.
The composition follows a traditional topographical structure. The fortress occupies the middle ground, perched upon a rise, while the foreground provides a sense of scale through the inclusion of local figures and a small stream. Van de Velde employs a restrained palette, favouring earthy ochres, soft browns, and muted greens to render the arid terrain and the stone masonry of the castle. The sky is treated with a light wash of blue, typical of his method of capturing the clear, bright light of the region.
Unlike the more romanticised or dramatic interpretations of the Orient produced by some of his contemporaries, Van de Velde maintained a focus on accuracy. His background in cartography informs the way he maps the terrain, ensuring that the architectural features of the castle are rendered with clarity. The figures in the foreground, dressed in traditional attire, are integrated into the scene to provide a sense of daily life rather than exotic spectacle. This work offers a glimpse into the mid-nineteenth-century perception of the Levant, documenting both the physical geography and the cultural atmosphere of the region as seen through the eyes of a European visitor.
