A detailed 1743 architectural etching by Jan Caspar Philips, documenting the Old Town Hall of Vlissingen with precision and historical accuracy.
This precise architectural print by Jan Caspar Philips depicts the Old Town Hall of Vlissingen as it appeared in 1743. Philips, a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam, was known for his topographical documentation of urban centres and public buildings. The work captures the formal structure of the building, which was designed by Andries I Keldermans and completed in the late sixteenth century.
The composition employs a clear, linear perspective to define the massing of the Town Hall. Philips uses fine hatching to render the stone textures, the rhythmic placement of the windows, and the decorative gables. The foreground features small figures in period dress, which provide a sense of scale to the grand architecture. The sky is rendered with subtle, horizontal lines, maintaining a focus on the structural details of the edifice rather than atmospheric effects.
This print serves as a historical record of the building, which was later destroyed by fire in 1809. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the conventions of eighteenth-century Dutch topographical art. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate complex architectural forms into a two-dimensional medium, ensuring that the proportions and stylistic elements of the Dutch Renaissance architecture remain legible. The inclusion of the sundial on the facade and the ornate staircase leading to the entrance are rendered with particular attention to detail, reflecting the artist's interest in documenting the specific character of the Vlissingen town centre.
