A nineteenth-century stereoscopic albumen print by Francis Frith, documenting the architecture and shoreline of Tiberias in the Holy Land.
This albumen silver print captures a view of Tiberias, situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Produced by the British photographer Francis Frith during his extensive travels through the Middle East in the late 1850s, the image is presented as a stereoscopic pair. This format was designed for viewing through a stereoscope, which created an illusion of three-dimensional depth for the viewer.
Frith was a pioneer of commercial travel photography. His expeditions to Egypt, Palestine, and Syria provided the Victorian public with their first detailed visual records of these regions. The composition focuses on the stone ruins along the water's edge, with the town of Tiberias visible in the background. The architectural elements, including the arched structures, are rendered with the clarity characteristic of the wet collodion process. The sepia tones are typical of the albumen printing technique, which involved coating paper with egg white and silver salts to achieve a smooth, glossy surface.
Beyond its technical interest, the photograph documents the physical state of the region during the mid-nineteenth century. Frith's work was widely distributed through his publishing firm, Francis Frith & Co., and helped shape European perceptions of the Holy Land. The image reflects the era's fascination with historical sites and the expansion of travel photography as a medium for both documentation and popular entertainment. By capturing the textures of the masonry and the stillness of the water, Frith provided a window into a geography that was, for most of his contemporaries, accessible only through such printed accounts.
