A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Cornelis van Noorde, capturing a rural scene near the Maagdenhuis in Haarlem.
This etching by Cornelis van Noorde depicts a specific topographical view in the Netherlands, titled 'Gezigt uit het Menniste Boschje by het Maagdenhuis, na de Kleine Hout-weg'. Van Noorde, a Dutch draughtsman and engraver active in Haarlem, produced a significant body of work documenting the local architecture and rural surroundings of the eighteenth-century Dutch Republic. His output often focused on the precise recording of buildings, public spaces, and the daily activities of citizens.
The composition employs a clear linear perspective, drawing the eye down a tree-lined path towards a distant structure. To the right, a farmhouse or outbuilding is rendered with careful attention to the texture of its wooden siding and the play of light and shadow cast by the surrounding trees. The scene is populated with figures in period dress, including a horse-drawn carriage and pedestrians, which provide a sense of scale and social context to the rural setting. The inclusion of domestic details, such as poultry and a barrel, adds to the observational quality of the work.
Technically, the print demonstrates the characteristic precision of Dutch etching from this period. Van Noorde uses varied line weights to differentiate between the dense foliage of the trees, the architectural surfaces, and the soft ground. The work functions as a historical record of the Haarlem area, capturing a moment in the development of the city's outskirts. It reflects the broader interest in topographical accuracy that defined much of the graphic art produced in the Netherlands during the late eighteenth century. The print remains a valuable resource for understanding the urban and rural planning of the era, as well as the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch middle class who collected such views.
