A haunting depiction of a yūrei beside a traditional oil lamp, rendered in ink and colour on silk by the Edo period artist Tani Bun'ichi.
This work by Tani Bun'ichi depicts a yūrei, or Japanese ghost, manifesting beside an andon, a traditional oil lamp. Bun'ichi, a student of Tani Bunchō, was active during the late Edo period. His approach to this subject demonstrates the technical skill required to render the ethereal nature of the supernatural. The figure is painted with soft, blurred ink washes that suggest a lack of physical substance, contrasting with the solid, dark form of the lamp stand.
The ghost is shown with long, flowing hair and a pale, translucent complexion, typical of the yūrei iconography that gained popularity in Japanese art during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The composition is vertical, designed for a hanging scroll format, which allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the spectral figure and the light source. The lamp itself acts as a grounding element, its dark, lacquered base providing a visual anchor for the composition. The flame at the top of the lamp is rendered with minimal detail, yet it provides the necessary context for the ghost's presence, as spirits in folklore are often associated with flickering lights or shadows.
Bun'ichi employs a subtle palette, relying on the natural tone of the silk support to define the atmosphere. The brushwork is precise where necessary, particularly in the rendering of the hand resting on the lamp base, yet it remains fluid in the depiction of the ghost's hair and robes. This balance between the tangible and the intangible is a hallmark of the artist's style. The work invites observation of the delicate transitions between light and dark, capturing a moment of quiet, unsettling stillness. It remains a representative example of the period's fascination with the macabre and the supernatural, executed with the restraint characteristic of the Tani school.
