A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder, depicting the biblical figures Gideon and Jair within a panoramic landscape.
This hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts two figures from the Book of Judges: Gideon and Jair. Collaert, a Flemish engraver active in Antwerp, produced this work as part of a series illustrating biblical narratives. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century printmaking, where figures are placed in the foreground against a receding background that provides context for the narrative action.
Gideon is shown on the left, dressed in classical military attire, holding a staff and accompanied by the fleece, a reference to his sign from God. Jair stands to the right, draped in a heavy, deep-toned robe. The background features a panoramic view of a valley with small-scale figures engaged in military movement, typical of the period's interest in combining portraiture with topographical detail. The print includes Latin inscriptions at the base, which provide theological context for the figures, as well as French annotations detailing their roles in the history of Israel.
The engraving technique demonstrates the precision characteristic of the Antwerp school. The lines are controlled and deliberate, defining the folds of the garments and the musculature of the figures. The application of colour, likely added after the initial printing, uses a palette of muted earth tones, soft blues, and deep reds to differentiate the figures from the landscape. The work reflects the period's preoccupation with moralising biblical stories, presented here with the clarity and structure common to printed books of the late sixteenth century. This piece is a clear example of the intersection between religious instruction and the technical mastery of the engraver's craft during the Northern Renaissance.
