A detailed salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus documenting plaster models of La Fontaine and Pascal for the Palais du Louvre.
This photograph by Édouard Denis Baldus captures two plaster models intended for the sculptural programme of the Palais du Louvre in Paris. The left figure represents the writer Jean de La Fontaine, sculpted by Jean Louis Nicolas Jaley, while the right figure depicts the mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal, sculpted by François Lanno. Baldus, a German-born French photographer, gained recognition for his technical precision and his documentation of French architectural heritage during the mid-nineteenth century.
The image is a salted paper print, a process that produces a matte surface with soft tonal transitions. Baldus presents these sculptures against a neutral background, isolating the forms to allow for a clear study of the drapery, posture, and facial features of the subjects. The composition is straightforward and objective, reflecting the documentary nature of his work for the Commission des Monuments Historiques. By recording these models, Baldus provided a permanent visual record of the preparatory stages of the Louvre's expansion, a project that involved numerous artists and craftsmen.
The clarity of the print allows the viewer to observe the texture of the plaster and the subtle modelling of the figures. The work is part of a larger series documenting the architectural and decorative elements of the Louvre. Baldus often utilised large-format negatives to ensure high levels of detail, which was necessary for the archival purposes of his commissions. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of nineteenth-century sculpture and the emerging field of architectural photography, where the camera functioned as a tool for both preservation and artistic record-keeping.
