A detailed salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus documenting plaster models for the Palais du Louvre by sculptor Hubert Lavigne.
This salted paper print by Édouard Denis Baldus documents the plaster models created by sculptor Hubert Lavigne for the extensive renovations of the Palais du Louvre in Paris. During the mid-nineteenth century, the French state commissioned Baldus to record the progress of these architectural improvements, a task that required both technical precision and an eye for sculptural form. The image presents two views of the same figure, a winged child holding a palm branch, captured in a neutral, studio-like setting that allows the viewer to examine the modelling of the plaster.
Baldus was a master of the calotype process, and his work is noted for its clarity and tonal range. By photographing these models, he provided a permanent record of the decorative elements intended for the building's facade. The composition is straightforward, placing the two figures side by side against a plain background to remove any distraction from the sculptural details. The soft, sepia-toned light renders the texture of the plaster with great accuracy, showing the subtle curves and shadows of the cherubic form. This photograph belongs to a larger series documenting the Louvre project, which remains a primary source for understanding the mid-century approach to architectural documentation and the intersection of photography with public works. The print captures the intersection of classical motifs and the industrial-era desire to archive the physical world through the lens of the camera. It is a study in form, light, and the preservation of artistic labour.
