An early portrait by Theo van Doesburg, 'Girl with Buttercups' features a simplified, abstracted depiction of a young girl with rosy cheeks and large, circular eyes, holding a cluster of red blooms.
Theo van Doesburg, born Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist who practised painting, writing, poetry, and architecture. He is best known as the founder and leading theorist of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; he was a proponent of geometric abstraction. Van Doesburg's work aimed to express a utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order. 'Girl with Buttercups' is an early work by van Doesburg, predating his involvement with De Stijl. The painting presents a simplified, almost abstracted, depiction of a young girl. Her face is rendered with large, circular eyes and rosy cheeks, while the buttercups are represented as a cluster of red blooms. The colour palette is limited, with a focus on pinks, reds, and greens, creating a somewhat naive and dreamlike atmosphere. The composition is tightly cropped, drawing the viewer's attention to the girl's face and the flowers she holds.
