Glenfinnan Viaduct in Highland Lochaber crosses a green hillside in tall grey arches, with rust coloured bracken and cloud brushed mountain tops creating a quiet early autumn view beneath the railway.
Glenfinnan Viaduct carries the West Highland Line across the glen near Loch Shiel. Robert McAlpine and Sons built the structure using mass concrete, forming 21 spans. Opened in 1901, it is Scotland’s longest concrete viaduct and a prominent example of engineering from the final years of the Victorian railway age.
The arches run diagonally across the scene, their shaded undersides contrasting with pale piers and sunlit green slopes. Leafy trees partly obscure the right hand spans. A band of copper bracken crosses the hillside below, with grey boulders among the near grass. Low white cloud touches the distant summit, while clear blue sky and warm vegetation suggest the start of autumn.
