Description
Glenrothes in central Fife spreads through green neighbourhoods below open farmland, its red roofed houses and wooded corridors giving a planned town a broad and leafy setting.
Designated in 1948, Glenrothes was Scotland's second postwar new town. It developed a pioneering approach to public art, employing a Town Artist from 1968, while the River Leven valley and land formerly belonging to Leslie House supplied important parkland within the expanding settlement.
An elevated panorama reveals clusters of red roofs separated by dark belts of trees. Pale industrial buildings and a few taller blocks interrupt the low housing pattern. Green fields occupy the near edge, with a small blue pond among the trees and rolling countryside beyond. Bright grass and full foliage suggest summer, under generous white clouds above the distant hills.
