Description
Gloucester in Gloucestershire retains a dockside world of tall warehouses and still basins, where the Severn’s inland trading connections survive in brick façades, quays and moored vessels.
The docks at Gloucester connect the River Severn with the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Warehouses and a dry dock grew around the basins as cargo moved between seagoing vessels and inland boats, leaving a concentrated industrial landscape within this Gloucestershire city.
Pale and red-brick warehouse fronts rise on either side of a quiet blue basin. Repeated dark windows create long vertical reflections, interrupted by a few moored boats. A tall mast draws a fine line above the centre, while bright cloud drifts between the roofs. Strong sunshine warms the masonry and leaves the dock water cool, giving the enclosed scene a clear summer stillness.
