A minimalist ink drawing by Dutch artist Lucebert, capturing a footballer in motion with a single, continuous line.
Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war art scene. Initially associated with the CoBrA movement, his work often rejected academic constraints in favour of a raw, spontaneous approach. This drawing, dated 7 December 1971, captures a footballer in motion with remarkable economy of line. The figure is rendered with a singular, continuous contour that defines the athlete's posture as he prepares to strike the ball.
The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the interaction between the player and the ball. A small, schematic structure sits at the base, providing a sense of scale and grounding the figure within a simplified environment. Lucebert's draughtsmanship here is direct and unadorned, reflecting his interest in the immediacy of expression. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the kinetic energy of the pose.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to convey movement through minimal visual information. The line quality is consistent and deliberate, avoiding decorative flourishes. It is a clear example of his later graphic style, which often utilised a childlike simplicity to explore human activity. The date and signature are integrated into the lower right, serving as a formal element of the composition. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's daily practice, where he frequently documented the world around him with a sense of detached observation. The stark contrast between the black ink and the plain paper surface ensures that the focus remains on the silhouette of the footballer, highlighting the artist's command of form and spatial economy.
