Description

A 1937 work by Paul Klee featuring symbolic, primitive figures and a mask-like face, exploring themes of conflict through simplified geometric forms.

Paul Klee produced this work in 1937, a period marked by his return to Switzerland and the increasing political instability across Europe. The composition features a central, mask-like face with wide, staring eyes and a simplified mouth, rendered in a palette of ochre, yellow, and muted grey. To the right, a smaller, totem-like figure stands in contrast to the larger visage. Below, stick-like figures engage in what appears to be a chaotic or ritualistic dance, holding circular and diamond-shaped objects. Klee employs a primitive aesthetic, using linear forms that recall ancient petroglyphs or children's drawings. The work is framed by a bold, red border that contains the action within a distinct space. The application of paint is textured, showing the physical nature of the paper support. By reducing the human form to basic geometric signs, Klee strips away individual identity, focusing instead on the archetypal nature of conflict. The title, inscribed at the bottom, provides a direct link to the theme of war, yet the execution remains enigmatic and detached from realistic depiction. This piece reflects Klee's interest in the intersection of visual art and symbolic language. He often sought to make the invisible visible, using line and colour to represent internal states or universal concepts. The figures are not meant to be read as specific people, but rather as actors in a theatre of human aggression. The contrast between the static, looming face and the active, smaller figures creates a sense of tension. Klee's ability to balance playfulness with darker subject matter is evident here, as the simplified forms belie the gravity of the title. The work remains a characteristic example of his late style, where economy of line and symbolic density take precedence over traditional representation.

Paul Klee portrait

Artist Biography

Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born artist whose distinctive style drew from expressionism, cubism, surrealism, and orientalism. Originally trained as a violinist, Klee turned to visual art in his teens, drawn to its expressive freedom. Though he initially worked only in black and white and doubted he would ever become a painter, a transformative trip to Tunisia awakened his sensitivity to color and inspired his lifelong exploration of its possibilities. Today, Klee is recognized as a pioneer of color theory, and his Writings on Form and Design Theory are considered as foundational to modern art as Leonardo da Vinci’s treatises were to the Renaissance.
